go back to idle curiosity

9 January 2000
And a belated Happy New Year to one and all! Due to the extremely horrible flu bug, Mistral's people have been unable to help him update his website lately but things may improve before too long! Blooming well better says Mistral! What a damp squib of a start to the year 2000 this has turned out to be!!!

14 January 2000
e-mail from jcebula@mistral0.demon.co.uk
-
What does 'waasch' mean Mistral? PS I have ten thousand ponies for sale - who wants them?
If you don't know, Jaco, I really don't know who does? Waaschy, waaschy WAASCH!!!!!!!
(Mistral would like to let it be known that he is always pleased to receive e-mails but would really like them to be a bit more sensible than the ones he has had to date! If possible?????)

22 January 2000
e-mail from a nice girl called Susie in Canada -
I stopped by Mistral's site today and really enjoyed looking around. Please feel free to stop by and visit mine.
Cheers, Susie
So glad you liked it! Yours is pretty good, too!

1 February 2000
Hello, everybody, it is a horrible wet and windy day here in Dunfermline and Mistral has nothing of interest to report!

10 February 2000
If any person out there has actually been reading any of this stuff, he or she or it will recall that Craig Ferguson and his film "The Big Tease" were mentioned ages ago when it premiered at the Film Festival in Edinburgh? Just thought you might like to know that "The Big Tease" is now being shown at selected cinemas nation-wide and is getting pretty good reviews!

29 February 2000
It seems very strange that People do not do something about all this Leap Year stuff. It surely must be possible to organise things a bit better or is Mistral confusing People with beings who care about doing things in a logical way? I guess he is - take that Scottish Parliament business (sorry to bring it up again!) but, for goodness sake, is it an embarrassment, or what?

7 March 2000
Pancake day! Just why are pancakes so moreish? No sooner is one tossed out of the pan than it is gobbled up and the next one follows and then the next and so on until suddenly all the batter has gone! And why do we never have them except on Shrove Tuesday? Weird!

29 March 2000
The following, rather puzzling, e-mail arrived for Mistral on the 22nd March -
Hello, I need a mash recipe for an article. Could you help me about that?
Thank you, Valérie. Courrier Hippique

www. hippique.qc.ca Tél.: (514) 252-3030 Fax: (514) 252-3165 courrier@hippique.qc.ca
After considerable deliberation, the following reply was duly sent off -

Dear Valerie
I am replying on behalf of Mistral, as he is a little puzzled by your request. He does not really have a recipe
for his Millennial Mash as it is just a jumble of stuff which comes into his head willy-nilly and cannot
therefore be quantified with any accuracy!
Now, if you wanted a recipe for potato mash, that would be a different story?
He has, however, consulted with two revered colleagues on a possible recipe for bran mash and their replies are as follows -

Well first you take some bran and warm water I think. Mix it all together, leave to congeal and hey presto!!!!!
And
Mistral could respond with a recipe for bran mash. Here are the instructions -
1) Take some bran
2) Mash it up.
3)Stick your big long nose in and then wolf it all down.
Please forward this recipe on ASAP to this person.
I do not suppose that this will be of much use for a serious article if that is what you are hoping to write but good luck anyway and best wishes from Mistral and all his friends and relatives!
(By the way, sorry to have to mention it, but not many horses nowadays actually eat bran mash, at least not any of the horses that Mistral is acquainted with!

30 April 2000
This e-mail just arrived from Emmie Foxall of the Dun Horse and Pony Society -
Hi - I've just visited Mistral's site & think it's great - thanks for the link to dhaps!
Mistral and Jack, and of course Mistral II are stunning horses - I'm sure you love em to bits!
Thanks again
Emmie (webmaster for DHAPS)
www.anzwers.net/free/emmie
Mistral is of course delighted to receive comments of the above calibre and would very much welcome more of a similar nature!

1 May 2000
May Day - a holiday - beginning of summer (allegedly!) - weather certainly very summery - all day long!

27 May 2000
This e-mail from Ian Foster -
Mistral... (How's the wind?)... Your website was so cute. I'm a boring old 43 years old male, from Merseyside and your site was the first thing to make me smile in days! Thanks... Ian.
So pleased to make you smile - not too sure about 'cute' though - am I labouring under the illusion that I am quite cool, even a tad sophisticated, or could it be that your judgement was a bit hasty, albeit kindly meant? Philosophers have been misunderstood since time began and it does not seem that the year 2000 will herald much change in that respect. Human nature!!!! Waaschhh!!!
As for the wind - it is in France, somewhere, silly!

4 June 2000
Those of you who are lucky enough to be familiar with this column will recall that Scottish actor/comedian Craig Ferguson has previously been mentioned on more than one occasion! At the risk of over-egging the omelette, another mention seems appropriate at this time, in view of the fact that the 'idle curiosity' film reviewers have recently been to see his latest film
"Saving Grace" which has been out now for a couple of weeks. Needless to say, it was excellent entertainment, a bit reminiscent of the old Ealing films and, to judge by the reaction of the other audience members, Mistral's representatives were not the only ones to appreciate this great bit of British filmmaking!
Well done, Craigsie - it's really "top-of-the-pops"!

12 July 2000
The new Harry Potter came out on 8 July and Mistral can truly say that it promises to be just as good as the three previous stories. Final verdict to come ASAP! More information about all the Harry Potter books can be found at the
Bloomsbury website.

21 July 2000
Can confirm that 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' is definitely the best so far! Riveting stuff for any age group but maybe a bit too scary for extremely young people! Now, if only Mistral had the time, he would surely come up with an equally enthralling tale - he could certainly do with a cash injection such as the one Joanne Rowling has earned!! In your dreams, Mistral!

5 August 2000
Well, it's August again and time for Edinburgh to go mad whilst all the Festivals take over the city! We locals just love it too, of course. It's great not being able to move around because of crowds of culture-loving visitors - mostly performers actually, frantically trying to drum up an audience for their "acts" - and what does it matter if you can't get in to the one thing you actually fancied because it's been sold out practically since the tickets went on sale - we get to live here when it's all over and they've gone home so, what could be better than that? For information about all the Edinburgh Festivals, go to
www.edinburghfestivals.co.uk or, better still, keep coming back here for a 'local's-eye-view' on how to enjoy Edinburgh in spite of the invasion! Mistral's informants will report back on their impressions of events as and when they occur!

23 August 2000
Impossible to move anywhere or do anything remotely normal in Edinburgh - did manage to see both the Salvador Dali exhibition at the Dean Gallery and the Paul Klee one at the National Gallery of Modern Art for FREE on the 12 August as it was the 150th Anniversary of the
National Galleries of Scotland. Unfortunately, it usually costs so if you can only afford one, make it the Klee.
Just missed seeing J K Rowling at the Book Festival but can live with the disappointment! Seems a boy has at last been chosen to play Harry Potter in the film version - he looks sort of OK, maybe!
If you can't decide what to go and see or, more likely, just can't be bothered going to get tickets, then sit yourself down at the Ross Bandstand in Princes St. Gardens where you will effortlessly be served up with a varied selection of what's on offer on the Fringe - or walk down the Royal Mile to see the FREE street entertainment!

31 August 2000
Today, the following, rather disconcerting, e-mail arrived -
Loved your website - possibly interested in having Mistral become a member of the exclusive Riding Right family!! We are an equine mail order catalog in the US (mostly English dressage) and would like to know more about marketing Mistral - as an exclusive?? Cute horse - cute idea! Does he really exist? Please let me know if this is of interest to you. Holiday catalog deadline is very soon - could be an opportunity...
Diane Somers President Riding Right, Inc.website: ridingright.com

After lengthy deliberations and endless consultations with hundreds of advisers (NOT) Mistral replied in the negative, the thought of being used as an advertisement too horrible to contemplate for long!
To his enormous relief, there has been no further reply!!!

2 September, 2000
Received the following e-mail today -
Hi! I am anxious to get a copy of Fry's Five Boys chocolate wrapper. Can you help? I know you were curious to find out what happened to this old favourite. I thought you might have found out and can help me.
To add to your curiosity, why do you think I am looking for this? Many thanks,
Regards, Lyndon Bowen

Dear Lyndon, My curiosity knows no bounds - why do you want a copy of a Fry's Five Boys wrapper? I cannot even begin to guess! What's more, I do not possess such a thing - the information I have came from a booklet called "Unforgettable Ads" published by the Reader's Digest in 1992 - I have attached a scan of the relevant page. Hope this is of some help - by the way, Fry's was taken over by Cadbury so maybe they could help you?
Best wishes, Mistral.

Followed by this from Lyn -
Dear Mistral, Many thanks for the scanned image of the Five Boys wrapper - just what I wanted. My reason for wanting this is very mundane. I remember very well the old Five Boys picture and I happen to have five grandsons, all under five. I just want to photo each of them and paste on to the old wrapper. Stupid I know but there is not much to do when you are retired and get to my age. Once again for your help. It is much appreciated.
Best wishes, Lyn Bowen

Glad to be of assistance,Lyn, but how on earth did you decide which grandson should have which caption??

7 November 2000
Received an e-mail yesterday from Alan Whiteley with the subject "your website" which reads as follows -
I think it is ace!!
Alan and his older sister Jenni live in Pudsey, West Yorkshire and the fact that they are cousins to Mistral's family has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on Alan's opinion of Mistral's website - does it????
